Earlier this month, at Linux World Expo, HP announced the formation of a new organization -- Open Source Solutions Operation (OSSO) -- to help drive its companywide strategy to contribute systems, software and services support to the open-source community. HP plans to continue its PC workstation support for Linux when the company ships its next-generation HP Kayak PC Workstations based on the IA-64 architecture, providing a smooth migration path for independent software vendors and customers. The European Laboratory for Particle Physics, (CERN), is one of HP's leading-edge customers that has implemented Linux on HP Kayak PC Workstations. HP has collaborated with CERN for more than a year to study the performance and reliability of the HP Kayak PC workstations running Linux. CERN's NA49 experiment, which simulates and studies the conditions of the very early universe, uses up to 30 dual-CPU HP Kayak PC workstations in a single large data-processing cluster. This cluster has been in service since late spring 1998, and operates around-the-clock (7x24) to process the more than 30 terabytes of physics data required by the experiment. Since the beginning of the collaboration, not a single hardware or Linux-related failure has been observed, further validating the reliability of the HP Kayak PC Workstations running the Linux operating system. ``Linux is enjoying almost exponential growth in the scientific community, and our work with HP is an important benchmark of its success,'' said Sverre Jarp, IT project manager with the Information Technology Division at CERN. ``The acceptance of Linux is certain.'' Linux, the result of a worldwide development effort over the Internet, is an open-source, multiuser, multitasking UNIXr systemlike operating system that runs on a variety of computing platforms. The Linux kernel source code can be downloaded from the Internet at no charge and is available to the public. The current installed base of Linux is estimated to be between 10 million and 15 million sites and is continuing to grow. No. 1 Workstation Vendor in 1998 In 1998, for the second year in a row, HP shipped more systems than any other vendor in the combined worldwide UNIX system and Windows NTr-based workstation market, according to International Data Corp. (IDC)(1). HP also ranks No. 1 in branded Windows NT-based workstation shipments. Information about HP Kayak PC Workstations can be found on the World Wide Web at http://www.hp.com/go/kayak.
