For my personal use, I use a lot of free & open source software, either for my Internet connection, or to realize this web site, or to share data with another computer under Windows 95. Among those, the most useful for me are:
First of all, I should name the system that allowed to me to transform my computer in a work as well as a fabulous pleasure tool. Multi-tasking (yes it's also useful for an individual), multi-user (I hope the children will have interest in it one day ;-) it's really a reliable system, stable and complete in the line of its big brothers, the other Unix systems. Since end 1993 (version 0.99pl14), I use this sytem to make everything, and frankly to do more and more things. All the tools mentioned after are used on this system. Thanks to Linux and to the thousands of contributors.
The leader undisputed in the the Web server field is obviously the one allowing to realize and test this site. You can add to it a lot of modules (mod_perl, php) to make it more powerful
I use my machine to read Usenet groups. But rather than to fetch them from a server, I prefer to have my own feed and manage my own server. In that case, INN is the choice to make. And it allows you to have fun doing
# grep blahblah /var/spool/news/articles/fr/usenet/forums/annonces/*example given.
